With a chill in the air, reminding us that winter is finally here, the congregation gathered for the solemn celebration of Pentecost. The evening commenced with the serene melodies of the organ, masterfully played by Mark, welcoming all into a space of reverence and anticipation.

The liturgy began with Metropolitan Raffaele leading the entrance hymn, his voice resonating with heartfelt devotion, setting a contemplative tone for the service. He spoke eloquently about the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, emphasizing how Jesus bestowed upon each believer the necessary gifts to proclaim His word with courage and clarity.

The congregation joined in common prayer, invoking the Lord’s mercy through the Kyrie Eleison. It was noted that “Eleison” comes from the word oil in Ancient Greek, symbolizing healing and anointing. This was followed by the Gloria, a morning hymn of praise, reminding us of the angelic announcement to the humble shepherds and the peace that Christ brings.

Father Mark delivered the readings, including the account from Acts, describing the tongues of fire and the Holy Spirit’s arrival, enabling all to hear the apostles in their own language—a testament to the universality of God’s message.

The Gospel was brought among the people, recounting Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit and His declaration as the Light of the World.

In his homily, Metropolitan Raffaele reflected on the distinct purposes and audiences of each Gospel, highlighting St. Mark’s portrayal of Jesus as a figure of humility and light. He spoke of the Holy Spirit descending as orbs of light and flames, illuminating the hearts of believers. Drawing from St. John of the Ladder, he emphasized that true light is found in humility, and that while pride in righteous actions is acceptable, it should never lead to domination over others. He encouraged all to approach God with wholeheartedness and to support one another, bearing each other’s burdens in love.

Prayers for the departed were offered, followed by the presentation of the Holy Gifts. The Creed was recited, affirming the shared faith, and the Sanctus was sung by the Metropolitan, accompanied by Father Mark on the organ. The gifts were blessed and transfigured, and the congregation honored the Blessed Mother by praying the Hail Mary, after which Metropolitan Raffaele sang a hymn dedicated to her.

The Our Father was recited in unison, leading into the communion of the clergy. As the congregation prepared for communion, Father Mark played reflective pieces, creating an atmosphere of solemnity. Following communion, the Metropolitan led a thanksgiving hymn, expressing gratitude for the sacred mysteries received.

The service proceeded with the Kneeling Prayers, invoking the “oil of gladness” associated with Pentecost, symbolizing the anointing and joy bestowed by the Holy Spirit.

The faithful then came forward to receive Holy Unction - Metropolitan Raffaele anointing everyone as a sign of spiritual renewal and healing. Everyone got to take a gift of the unction oil, to anoint themselves and others when needed. The liturgy concluded with the singing of the final hymn, leaving all present with hearts uplifted and spirits renewed by the grace of the Holy Spirit.
